How Does Driver Education Work?
In North Carolina, anyone under the age of 18 is required to complete a driver education course consisting of at least 30 hours of classroom instruction and a minimum of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. To be eligible for registration, students must be 14 years and 6 months old by the first day of class.
Once the classroom phase is completed, students will be assigned to behind-the-wheel driving sessions based on their birth date (oldest to youngest). You can expect a scheduling call within 15-30 days. Our instructors offer flexibility in scheduling, with availability during afternoons, evenings, and Saturdays. Most students are picked up from home for their driving sessions, unless other arrangements are made.
It typically takes 3 to 4 days to complete the behind-the-wheel phase, and upon completion, a Driver Education Completion Certificate will be issued. This certificate does not expire.
Afterward, you’ll need to obtain a Driver Eligibility Certificate from your high school, which verifies the student has met the progress requirements. This certificate expires 30 days from the issue date. Once you have this, along with your birth certificate and social security card, you can apply for your learner’s permit at the DMV.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact our office staff.
How Do I Obtain My Driver Eligibility Certificate From My High School?
Contact the administrative offices of the school the student attends to obtain this form.
Is Vision Screening Required?
Yes, a vision screening is required. During the 30-hour classroom phase, a DMV representative will conduct a vision and medical screening for all students. Students who pass the screening will receive a Restricted Instruction Permit, allowing them to begin behind-the-wheel training.
Students cannot begin behind-the-wheel training until they have successfully completed the vision screening.
Please note: Students will not be placed on the driving schedule without passing the vision screening.
When Does Vision Screening Occur?
Please contact Maintain Your Lane Driving School for upcoming vision screening dates.
How Long Does the Vision Screening Take?
The screening takes less than 5 minutes.
What Happens During the Behind-the-Wheel Training?
Once classroom training is complete, students will be scheduled for behind-the-wheel instruction. The instructor will work with your schedule to arrange driving sessions. Sessions typically take place in the afternoons, evenings, or on Saturdays.
